My Ford Taurus dome light wont turn off

My Ford Taurus dome light wont turn off

I am sitting in the Ford Taurus I picked up, and after I turned on my dome light, it wouldn’t turn back off. I have not seen this before and would like to know how to fix this. So after thorough research online, this is what I found about my Ford Taurus dome light won’t turn off.

The reason why the dome light will not turn off is because of an electrical switch. Either the light control knob was turned on accidentally, the dome light itself can be stuck in the on position, or one of the door switches is held in the open position. Let’s look further into this and see if we can solve our problem at hand.

Why wont my Ford Taurus dome light turn off?

As stated in the previous paragraph, the reason, why your dome light will not turn off, is because of an electrical switch. This electrical switch has been grounded or shorted and is causing your dome light not to be able to turn off.

There is always the chance that you accidentally bumped the light control knob and that that should be the first place to check. So now it’s time to look deeper into the vehicle and see if we can find the culprit of our problem.

What is causing my Ford Taurus dome light to not turn off?

You need to check the light control knob first. Then you can check the door switches. These doors switches are going to sit right on the inseam of your door once you open it.

It will look like a push-button plastic piece that once the door closes, it sends a signal to the dome lights that it is time to turn off. Over time these switches get stuck open, and when you shut your door, it will not send that signal.

When will my Ford Taurus dome light not turn off?

Your dome light not being able to turn off can happen at any time; it depends on why it is happening. In the case that it is a worn wire than any time that the Copper wire inside the insulation touches metal, it can cause the circuit to open and close by itself.

In the case that it is the door switch, then the dome light will not turn off due to the door switch not telling the dome lights that all the doors are closed.

Is my dome light not turning off bad for my Ford Taurus?

It is terrible for your vehicle that the dome light will not turn off. While the car is sitting and is not running the dome light is draining voltage from the battery.

That means the next time you go out to your vehicle to start it and to leave for work or anywhere you are going, and the car will be dead.

So solving this problem as soon as possible is not only great for you and the peace of mind, but it is also great for your vehicle and the longevity of your vehicle’s battery.

How can I get my dome light turned off in my Ford Taurus?

First, you need to check that you did not bump the light control knob. Second, it is now time to check the doors switches. So open the door and push and hold the doors switch to see if the light will turn off. Remember only to have one door open at a time.

You will need to take a can of WD40 and spread it into the door switch. By spraying the door switch, this will free up the switch mechanism and let the vehicle know that the door is closed and the dome light can now turn off. By doing this, it is a temporary solution to the door switch being stuck in the closed position.

For a long term solution, you will need to replace the door switch with a new one, so this will not give you problems again down the road.
