Planning a big cross-country road trip with the family? If you drive a compact SUV like the Volkswagen Tiguan, you know space can be tight. Adding a tow hitch is the perfect DIY upgrade to expand your cargo capacity with a bike rack or carrier, making the journey much smoother.
In this quick guide, we break down the straightforward process of installing a 2-inch Curt tow hitch on a 2011 Volkswagen Tiguan, as demonstrated by the team at Sell Those Flipping Cars.
Why Install a Tow Hitch?
For us, the motivation was simple: a cross-country trip required more comfortable space for the family and all their gear. [01:14] A tow hitch allows you to easily attach a cargo carrier, freeing up valuable interior space. [01:20] It's a great investment for boosting your SUV's utility, whether for bikes, small trailers, or just extra storage. [01:53]

-
Curt 2-inch Tow Hitch (Comes with all necessary hardware)
-
17mm Socket and Battery Impact (Makes installation much quicker) [01:44]
-
Tools for Cutting: Xacto knife and a Sawzall (if you don't have an air saw) [02:58]
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
The entire process is manageable even if you're new to auto DIY.
1. Prep the Bumper for Clearance
The only modification required is cutting a small section out of the rear bumper's undercarriage.
-
Look underneath the rear bumper fascia. You will see a perforated edge on the bumper plastic. [02:41]
-
You need to cut out the last 6.5-inch piece on the right side of this perforated section to create space for the hitch receiver. [01:35], [02:49]
-
You can use a Sawzall and an Xacto knife to clean up the edges of the cut. [02:58]
2. Install the Hitch and Secure the Bolts
The hitch is designed to fit directly into the frame slots exposed after the cutting.
-
The hitch kit comes with four 17mm bolts and all the hardware you need. [01:41], [02:31]
-
You will be securing two bolts on one side and two on the other. [03:05]
-
Use your battery impact with a 17mm socket to zip the bolts in place, ensuring the hitch is mounted "nice and sturdy." [03:26]
Mission Accomplished: Ready for the Road
That's it! With the Curt tow hitch installed, your Volkswagen Tiguan is immediately ready to handle extra cargo. [03:58] Whether you're heading camping or just making a big move, this simple upgrade significantly increases your vehicle's capability. [03:42]
