Introduction: Don't Get Locked Out!
There’s nothing more frustrating than walking up to your Ford Explorer, hitting the unlock button, and nothing happens [00:15]. Or worse, seeing the dreaded "No Key Detected" warning on your dashboard while the engine is running [00:22].
These are the clearest signs that your key fob battery is dying.
The great news? This is a quick, 5-minute DIY job that will save you a trip to the dealership and a hefty service fee [01:38]. This guide works for 2016 through 2020 Ford Explorers that use the same style key fob [01:24].
Symptoms of a Dying Key Fob Battery
Before you start, check for these warning signs:
-
Intermittent Unlocking: The doors only unlock sometimes when you press the button.
-
Reduced Range: You have to stand right next to the vehicle for the remote to work [01:32].
-
"No Key Detected" Warning: The vehicle warns you the key is not detected even when it is inside the cabin.
🔋 What You Need: The Right Battery
You only need one tool and the correct batteries. The most important step is getting the battery type right!
-
Battery Type: The correct batteries for the 2017 Ford Explorer key fob are CR2025 [01:53].
-
Quantity: You will need two (2) CR2025 batteries, as they are stacked inside the fob [02:34].
-
Tool: The physical backup key that is already inside your fob is the only tool required!
Step-by-Step Key Fob Battery Replacement
Follow these steps for a clean, damage-free battery swap:
1. Open the Key Fob Case
-
Locate the small notch on the back of your key fob [02:08].
-
Grab your physical backup key and insert the end into that notch [02:14].
-
Use steady pressure and gently pry the casing open. The two halves of the key fob will come apart cleanly [02:21].
2. Remove and Note Orientation
-
Once the case is open, you will see two batteries stacked on top of each other [02:34].
-
Gently lift each battery out using your finger or a small flat tool [02:40].
-
Crucial Tip: Pay close attention to the positive (+) and negative (-) orientation of the batteries, as you must install the new ones the exact same way [02:47].
3. Install the New Batteries
-
Grab your fresh CR2025 batteries.
-
Slide the first one in, ensuring the positive side is facing the same direction as the one you just removed [02:57].
-
Do the same with the second battery [03:03].
4. Snap the Case Shut
-
Line the key fob cover back up over the bottom half.
-
Snap the case shut, pressing all around the edges to ensure it is properly sealed [03:09].
Final Test
Step outside and test the remote. If your lights flash and you hear that familiar click, your 2017 Ford Explorer key fob battery replacement is officially complete! [03:26] You just saved money and kept on wrenching!
