5W-30 Synthetic Blend: The Ultimate DIY Oil Change Guide for the 3.5L EcoBoost (Ford Explorer/F-150)

5W-30 Synthetic Blend: The Ultimate DIY Oil Change Guide for the 3.5L EcoBoost (Ford Explorer/F-150)

The 3.5L EcoBoost engine is a powerhouse found in many popular Ford and Lincoln vehicles, including the Explorer, F-150, Expedition, and Navigator. While the engine is powerful, proper maintenance, especially oil changes, is critical to its longevity.

We’re walking you through the entire DIY oil change process on a 2017 Ford Explorer, covering the tools, oil type, and the critical step of resetting your vehicle’s oil life monitor.

Tools and Supplies Needed

For this service, you will need:

  • Oil: Six quarts of 5W-30 synthetic blend or full synthetic oil.

  • Filter: A new engine oil filter.

  • Tools: 15mm socket/wrench, oil filter pliers, and a drip pan.

  • Safety: Rags, and appropriate supports (jack stands).

Step 1: Access and Drain the Oil

  1. Safety First: Safely lift and support the front of your vehicle. (Always confirm your jacking points—check our guide on The Exact Ford Explorer Jack Points to avoid frame damage).

  2. Remove the Skid Plate: The 3.5L EcoBoost is protected by a forward skid plate (or splash shield). You will need to remove the mounting screws/bolts to gain access to the drain plug and oil filter.

  3. Drain the Oil: Place your drip pan under the oil pan. Use the 15mm tool to remove the drain plug and let the oil drain completely.

Pro Tip: When reinstalling the drain plug, do not overtighten it. Your future self (and your oil pan) will thank you! See the full video for the correct torque feel.

Step 2: Replacing the Oil Filter

While the old oil is draining, open your oil fill cap to allow air to flow, which helps the oil drain faster.

  1. Remove Old Filter: Once the flow has slowed, use the oil filter pliers to loosen and remove the old oil filter. Be ready for a small amount of oil to spill out.

  2. Prep the New Filter: Never install a dry filter. Take a small amount of old oil and run it around the rubber O-ring on your new filter. This lubricates the seal, preventing it from sticking or cracking.

  3. Install: Hand-tighten the new filter until it is snug. No need to crank it down; it is a non-moving part.

Step 3: Refill, Check, and Reset

  1. Reinstall: Put the drain plug back in and tighten it (remember not too tight!).

  2. Fill: Slowly add the 5W-30 synthetic oil into the filler neck. The 3.5L EcoBoost typically takes six quarts.

  3. Check Level: Check the dipstick. Once the level is at or near the full mark, you can start the engine to circulate the new oil. Look underneath quickly to check for any leaks at the drain plug or filter.

  4. Final Check: Turn off the engine, wait a few minutes, and recheck the dipstick. Top off as needed.

Air Filter Reminder: Routine oil changes are the best time to check your air filter. If you have a reusable K&N filter, learn How to Clean and Re-Oil Your K&N Filter as part of your service!

Resetting the Oil Life Monitor

On most modern Ford vehicles, you must manually reset the Oil Life Monitor to clear the "Engine Oil Change Required" message:

  1. Access Menu: Turn the vehicle on. Go to the main menu (usually on the steering wheel controls).

  2. Settings: Navigate to Settings right arrow Vehicle right arrow Oil Life.

  3. Reset: Press the right arrow button, then press and hold OK to reset the oil life to 100%.

🛠️ Post-Service Diagnostic Safety

After any maintenance, especially if you had to unplug sensors or touch electrical components (like the battery to check terminals), it is a good idea to run a diagnostic check.

We highly recommend having an affordable diagnostic tool on hand to clear any lingering codes or check for new ones after a DIY service.
