⚡ Fixing P0302 in Your 3.5L EcoBoost: 2017 Ford Explorer Cylinder 2 Misfire Diagnosis and Repair

Introduction: Decoding the Dreaded P0302

If your 2017 Ford Explorer is idling rough, hesitating, or flashing that Check Engine Light, you might be facing the infamous P0302 code. This code points to a misfire in Cylinder 2. While the fix is usually a simple spark plug replacement, getting to that cylinder—especially on a transverse-mounted 3.5L EcoBoost—can be a challenge.

In this guide, we break down the diagnosis, the exact location of Cylinder 2, and the steps to fix the misfire right the first time.

1. Diagnosis: Starting with the P0302 Code

The first step is confirming the issue. As we show in the video, every DIY mechanic needs an OBD2 scanner [01:39].

The P0302 code specifically means "Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected." While this often points to a bad spark plug or coil pack, it can also indicate issues with the fuel injector or compression. Since the spark plug is the cheapest and easiest fix, it's always where you should start.

2. Location is Everything: Finding EcoBoost Cylinder 2

The key challenge on the Ford Explorer is the transverse (sideways) mounting of the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 [02:16]:

  • Bank 1 (Rear Bank): This side faces the firewall and contains Cylinders 1, 2, and 3.

  • Bank 2 (Front Bank): This side faces the radiator and contains Cylinders 4, 5, and 6.

Cylinder 2 is located on the rear bank, right in the middle position. It's tight, but accessible [02:45].

3. The Fix: Replacing the Cylinder 2 Spark Plug and Coil

Once you've located the cylinder, here is the quick process for the spark plug and coil swap:

  1. Safety First: Disconnect the negative battery terminal [03:04].

  2. Coil Disconnection: Slide the red retaining clip back on the ignition coil connector, squeeze the connector, and pull it off [03:18].

  3. Coil Removal: Use an 8mm socket to remove the bolt securing the ignition coil [03:37].

  4. Spark Plug Removal: Use a spark plug socket to remove the old plug. Crucially, inspect the old plug for oil fouling or carbon buildup, which can signal deeper engine problems [04:07].

  5. Installation: Install the new spark plug, ensuring it is torqued to spec [04:24]. Reinstall the ignition coil, reconnect the connector, and secure the red clip [04:32].

4. Final Step: Clearing the Code and Next Steps

Once the repair is complete, plug in your OBD2 scanner, clear the stored codes [04:43], and start the engine. You should immediately notice a much smoother idle [04:52].

What's Next? If one plug has failed, the others are likely not far behind. We recommend replacing all six spark plugs as soon as possible, which is the subject of our next video! [05:08].
