Every truck owner buys their vehicle with one thought in mind. That thought is, Will this truck do what I am needing from it? This is the hardest decision to make and hints the reason why car dealerships hired a sales team, so they can help you with this decision.
Now we all know every vehicle cannot be perfect and that is why we customize our vehicles, this way they are a perfect match for us.
With everyone being different in their own way but the idea stays the same and that is perfectly your vehicle to be that perfect math for you.
So with all of the F150’s that are out on the road right now, let’s go through the 9 Crucial Mods to have on your F150, and see which ones stand out to you to make your truck completely perfect for you and your needs you require.
Chip/programmer
This is not only an awesome mod to have, but this is also a required mod to have. The new F250 with the EcoBoost engine has up to 450 horsepower in it with the twin-turbo engine.
Just imagine if you could get inside that engine and tweak the fuel to air ratio by a little bit, how much power would you be receiving then?
This programmer does exactly that, although you do not need to know all the calculations you need to make sure your air to fuel ratio works in conjunction with the power need of your engine.
Most programmers already come pre-loaded with easy options. They usually ask what driving style do you want. Race? Towing? Eco-friendly? Then you select it and go, it is just that easy to pull an extra 20- 40 horsepower out of your engine.
Armor front and rear
I absolutely love the aggressiveness of these bumper modifications! Not only can your winch mount right up to the bumper but most of these armored bumpers have spots already designed and cut out for your LED lights.
Which I find as a required mod if you are building an offroad or recovery vehicle. You gotta see right?

Winch
Could a truck really be classified as an off-road truck if it doesn’t have a winch? I don’t think so, an off-road truck is one that can go off the road and not count on the street lights to turn on at night to see.
An off-road truck cannot count on anything or anyone to actually be there for when something happens. Why do you think when you see a Jeep heading to a Jamboree, that you see they have a water and fuel can filled up and on their vehicle.
Does that mean no one will be at the Jeep Jamboree? No, it means that the driver of that vehicle wants to be ready for anything because when you go into the backcountry you have to be ready for anything mother nature can throw at you, and that includes the darkness of night.
Exhaust
This one is a given, we all know that an exhaust system is a top modification for a truck. But I wanted to make sure I put this on there for everyone so you can remind yourself this is a must-have modification that we need to increase the torque and horsepower of the truck.
With this being such an easy mod to install this should be one of your top first choices to knock out because this mod will definitely supply a whole bucket of power to your truck. Who doesn’t love horsepower by the bucket loads!!
LED light package front, rear, top
Lights, lights, lights, I can’t say it enough! Don’t be that jerk driving down the road though with all your LED’s on blinding the other drivers.
These are not toys junior, these are tools that every truck owner should have! If you use your truck for off-road, rigging, or towing then you need these to make your job easier.
Who wants to back up to a trailer that they can barely see while a ten-foot deep trench is close to you…..was it 6 or 13 feet away?
This is a great option to have access to so you can keep yourself and your truck safe from uneven terrain, your trailer hitting other parked objects and many other situations that can ruin your day with a quickness.
It is always vital to keep your vehicle running strong for you for years to come. Check out my article highlighting the 12 Crucial Maintenance Things to Check on your Vehicle to keep your vehicle running strong for you!
Cold air intake
With the new F150, we already have the boost from the turbos and we spoke about the exhaust, but there is an even easier mod you can have before the exhaust.
That mod is the Cold Air Intake, colder air means more power for your engine. With more power comes more responsibility……wait my bad wrong article that is Spider-Man.
With more power comes more torque that your truck can use with the towing and recovery operations. It reminds me of an article I read years back and the owner of the car said: “horsepower is like money in the bank, you don’t have to use it but it is always nice to know it is there.”
That statement could not be any closer to the truth than in this situation.
Intercooler and upgraded turbo parts
Bigger is better, especially when it comes to turbos! We are not going to change the turbos out but more of beef up your turbo system by installing an intercooler and some other turbo related parts to push some more boost through the truck.
An intercooler will work amazingly with your engine but since the turbo system is already installed with an intercooler on your F150 EcoBoost engine, we will just be replacing the smaller turbo system components with the bigger components.
By doing this we will be giving our truck even more power!
Sidestep bars
With a nice size truck, I always enjoy not having to stretch my legs too far that I feel like I am getting ready to run track. I want a step to help me get in my truck with some class and this mod will do just that.
You can have the step bars that are just normal nerf bars or you can use a little extra cash and get the automatic step bars, which will open and close depending on if the passenger door for that step is open or not. You will also make it a lot easier for children to get in the truck if you have any.
Have you ever wondered why the auto parts store wants to sell you the more expensive brake pads? Check out my article on the 6 reasons why you should pay more for your brake pads, you might be surprised!
4″ lift kit with the leveling kit
With the new step bars, the lift kit is going to look amazing! With a 4 inch lift, you will be able to fit 35″ tires without rubbing so that is always a plus.
You need to check before you get a lift kit done if the tires you are wanting to put on the vehicle after can actually fit. If they do not fit then additional wear and tear to your tires will occur and you will not get the full life out of them.
If you have ever checked the prices on off-road tires this price can really sting so make sure you watch that. In the case, you have not picked your tires yet or have decided on which tires you want for a 35″ Toyo is $300 each on Amazon so you want to make sure you get the entire tire life out of your investment.
Mudflaps
This is not only a courtesy for other drivers but a requirement by the DOT in certain states. Make sure you save yourself the headache of being pulled over and fined by check-in your state mud flap laws.
Personally, I wouldn’t drive a lifted truck with off-road tires on the highway without mud flaps due to my own personal experience with it. I was actually hit by a ball of mud and rocks in the head while riding my motorcycle and a truck that just completed a successful mud run jumped on the highway.
Unfortunately, I was riding behind this truck when he started to throw mud and I was hit, thankfully I was wearing my helmet and did not crash the bike.
But it did daze me for a second and thankfully the highway was not congested at that time. Because it only takes a second of not paying attention to a motorcycle to get in an accident.
So please be careful and protect yourself and the other drivers, it is up to you to make sure your vehicle is not a hazard on the open road.
*BONUS* Fender Extenders
Since I gave you an easy mod like the exhaust option here is a different mod as a nice bonus. Now you have your truck lifted, armored, shining, and off-road ready.
Let’s make it even more aggressive with the fender extenders with the bolts. To me, this looks mean and very aggressive, of course, everyone is different but to a nice jacked up truck who wouldn’t want to look like the meanest truck on the block?!
In Conclusion
There are many mods out there for your F150 and as I said everyone is different but no matter what be safe in what you do and make sure you are not a hazard on the road to other drivers.
